Class Experience

Percy Jackson… Aladdin… Iron Man… Anna and Elsa… Luke Skywalker and Rey… Peter Pan… The Black Panther... and, of course, Harry Potter… All are great adventure heroes! The great protagonists. Memorable main characters who we grow to care about. We feel what they feel and we root for them! Would you like to invent your own fantasy-adventure-comic hero? Using her specialized “story sheets” along with illustrations and book/movie/animation examples, Sharon will guide students to develop all of the key details of their “good guys” through writing and drawings. Sharon’s development technique is very similar to the content development technique she used in Hollywood animation studios. No prior knowledge is necessary, just a love for make-believe! In this highly interactive class, children will share their ideas, writings, drawings and will talk about their own favorite adventure stories.

During this 2-part class, we will cover the following:
a) Sharon will "show & tell" about many beloved adventure heroes (main characters, protagonists) from famous fantasy, adventure, faerie tale, mythological and comic book stories (books, TV, movies, games, legends, folklore, etc).
b) Students will share their favorite protagonists / heroes from their favorite adventure stories
c) Discussion of the personality traits, physical attributes, moral values and backstories that help to create a compelling “star” of an adventure story
d) Sharon will show illustrations, paintings, images, film clips of several beloved heroes that best demonstrate the decisions that authors/illustrators/directors and other story-spinners make when inventing the main characters of their adventure story.
e) Sharon’s “story sheets” - students will answer a variety of questions about their protagonist of a story - using drawings, full illustrations, descriptive writing and mega-imaginations. These questions help students (and Hollywood media executives!) to plan all of the details needed to create a popular “star” of their adventure story!
f) Students will share their character creations (illustrations and writings from the story sheets) with their classmates
g) Sharon adds fun elements to her virtual classes such as adventure music, visual art, icebreaker games and more!

Learning Goals

Students will learn to write vivid character descriptions, character motivations and compelling backstories -- based on story prompts crafted by Sharon to elicit imaginative and clear story-planning. Students will also learn to illustrate the details of their character development, again based on Sharon's expert prompts. Literary Devices studied in language arts classes will truly be reinforced in Sharon's class!
