In this four-day course, students will learn how to draw cartoons in various styles, how to create a comic story board, and how to digitize a graphic novel of their own making.

Class experience

Students will learn how to generally use Pixlr.com (a free online graphic design software similar to Photoshop), how to draw cartoons in various styles, how to brainstorm visually using a sketchbook, and learn the general history of animation and comic books.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Art Education, am a licensed art teacher in the state of Indiana, and have been teaching art professionally since 2008. In addition, I have taught several variations of this specific course as an art project from grades 3-8 at several certified schools as a licensed art teacher.
Homework Offered
Each day students will learn a new technique. They will be given a specific drawing task to complete before the next day. Whatever portion of the task is not completed in class will be completed after the class on the student’s own time and must be finished before the next class, so the student is ready for the new technique.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
No formal assessment will be given. However, students will be showing the instructor each step they complete as they complete it in order to make sure the techniques taught are being following accurately and completely.
Grades Offered
8.5x11” or 9x12” white paper (copy paper or sketchbook paper works, not lined paper)
#2 wooden pencils and a white plastic eraser (mechanical pencils make scratches in the paper)
A black pen or ultra-fine tipped black marker
Colored pencils or crayons
Familiarity with their device’s camera and where it saves photos
Access to a computer with internet (a tablet or phone may not work as well with Pixlr) and the ability to switch back and forth between Zoom and other apps on their device
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
As students learn about the history of comic books, they may see comic characters classified as anti-heroes such as Punisher. Superheroes in comics also wear tight-fitting clothing, and graphic novel covers will be displayed. As students view the different styles of cartoons, there may be more sarcastic characters displayed as well as Anime characters. When using Pixlr.com to digitally edit their comic drawings, place them into a single page layout, and add captions in order to gitize their comic books, there can be ads for food products and stores do pop up on the website, but they are not inappropriate. Please note again, that Pixlr does not require an account or download and is accessed completely online. It is COPPA compliant and has been built to help educators.
We will be using Pixlr.com to digitally edit the students' comic drawings, place them in a single page layout, and add captions for the digitized comic book. Pixlr is a free photo-editing software that is entirely online and does not require an account or download to use and is COPPA compliant. Students can also use software and/ or accounts they already have such as Canva, Google slides, phone apps, and PowerPoint. However, only Pixlr will be taught.
