Graphic Design: Intro to Adobe Illustrator

In this Graphic Design Beginner Level Course, students will learn some of the basics to navigate through Adobe Illustrator. Students will be introduced to the different color modes, commonly used tools and then, students will focus on using the pen tool to create vector graphics. The pen tool is one of the most important tools in Illustrator and in vector graphic design. Students will also learn to work with art boards and choose fill and stroke colors while creating vector graphics in class. 

Day 1: Introduction to Adobe Illustrator: Color Mode, Art Boards, Commonly Used Tools, Color Swatches, Shortcut Keys, Intro to the Pen Tool (Tutorial) & Begin Pen Tool Exercise - Recreating an Image Using the Pen Tool
~ Day 1 - we do go through a lot of the software and then begin an exercise, during that time there is usually very little communication as students are focused on learning the new tool and completing the assignment. The instructor will occasionally ask if anyone has questions or needs help. Students are also always encouraged to speak up and ask questions. Students will be encouraged to continue working on their cartoon recreation after class.

Day 2: Pen Tool Exercise - Recreating an Image Using the Pen Tool
~ Day 2 - We will continue recreating our cartoon image as a class. There will be a couple of techniques the instructor will walk students through and then students will focus on completing the assignment. During that time, there will be little communication as students are again focused on their work. The instructor will occasionally ask if anyone has questions or needs help. Students are also always encouraged to speak up and ask questions. 

Students will be provided with class files prior to class. These should be downloaded to your computer and open prior to the start of class. The teacher will provide in-class instruction and activity walkthroughs. The teacher will share her screen and walk students through the software and the various course activities. Students are welcome to ask questions and at times the teacher might request for the student to share his or her screen should there be an issue the teacher needs to help the student with. Students are also encouraged to utilize the classroom message board for questions.

No previous experience required using the software, but a strong familiarity with using a computer, mouse and keyboard is highly recommended. 

It is very important to make sure that your computer meets all of the tech requirements for Adobe Illustrator.
