Class Experience

NOTE: students must own Adobe Photoshop to complete the course, NOT Photoshop Elements. See additional information.

This is a very thorough and in-depth course, which will enable student students to tackle a variety of projects and create designs. Their creative skills and abilities will also be challenged and refined.

Over 8 sessions, students will learn the basics of Graphic Design, and come up with their own designs for various projects.

Each session learners will complete tasks together, following what they see me do on my screen. They will use images and graphics provided beforehand, to complete that week's tasks, and learn the tools and skills needed for each step. I will demonstrate where different tools are located within the Photoshop software, how to use them.

Students will be given 2 independent projects to work on over the 2 weeks, and will submit these to the classroom.

The topics covered on the course are as follows:

Week 1:
Day 1: Getting set up in Photoshop and understanding text

Day 2: Styling our text - making our names out of balloons

Day 3: Patterns, Colours and Textures - create your name in patchwork, wood, or even carve it in marble!

Day 4: Working with Shapes - design your own keychain

Week 2:
Day 5: Working with Digital Paintbrushes - Please note, learners will be directed to a website outside of Outschool in order to download brushes. Please see resource list below for more information.

Day 6: Working with filters. In this lesson, learners will also be given the opportunity to design a logo for clothes, in their course assignment.

Day 7: Project week - Make your selfies POP! Creating a pop-art effect using a photograph.

Day 8: Project week - Create some Magic! Turn an ordinary image into a magical scene with light, sparkle and more!

By the end of the course students will be familiar with the main areas of Photoshop, and be able to make their own creations.

It is important for students to be able to see the lesson and photoshop at the same time, and so using 2 screens is advisable.

Master's Degree in Education from Northumbria University
Bachelor's Degree in English from University of Newcastle
I'm a qualified teacher, experienced in teaching English, History, Music, and Art. I home educated my two children, who are now at university, and I have taught in mainstream schools, and in Special-Ed schools.

I have also taught piano, guitar, singing, and music theory, taking students through grade examinations.

I am experienced in teaching the British GCSEs, and through home-schooling, I taught my own children using American curriculum. I teach Language Arts, English Literature and Language, Creative Writing, Poetry - both writing, and reading, and many other fantastic and interesting topics.

I teach writing skills using the Writing Revolution techniques, and have seen students improve their writing skills rapidly using some of the techniques applied.

In addition, I worked as a graphic designer for 10 years, working from home, and offer graphic design and video editing classes, using Adobe Creative Suite, DaVinci Resolve, and soon, Affinity creative suite.

Growth Mindset is very important in my classes, and I encourage it in all learners - Growth Mindset is the belief that even if you can't do something or don't understand something, then you CAN learn how to do it or understand it. Growth Mindset says "I can't do it YET, but I can learn." Learning happens through making mistakes, and then modifying your approach, changing what you do, to improve. I encourage all learners to try, and to feel comfortable making mistakes, because that's how we all learn.
