This class will take 3 days demonstrate how to derive the equation y = mx + b, what the variables represent in the equations, and how to graph the equations. We will also interpret the graphs to be able to write the equation for the graph. There's also a couple of fun graphs where there's a golf game and one with Zombies - you'll just have to come and find out what I mean! My lessons include slide presentations and worksheets to practice along during the lesson. I teach by relating to the real world, modeling examples, working through problems together, and then students practice on their own for a few problems. I check for understanding by their discussions and participation as we go through the lesson. I strongly encourage interaction between students and myself because communication and understanding of the vocabulary is so important. Students should have prior knowledge of coordinate points and graphing linear equations in the form of y = mx.

Supply List
A calculator, pencil, and paper would be useful. Worksheets are provided to follow along with the lesson presentation. There is a graphic organizer attached that should be available for day 1 and two worksheets for day 2 and two for day 3.

I'm Mrs. Essmeier, and I love teaching Mathematics. There are so many wonderful patterns to discover with numbers. Understanding why you use certain equations and how these concepts work is an important part of mathematics. My objective is to help my students to understand the connection between the math they learn and the real world in which they live. Mathematics is something you will use every day in one way or another. The more you know and understand, the more you will use.
I provide one on one tutoring for one, two, or three days for one week or ongoing. My tutoring includes the topics found in the curricula for most 6th through 10th grades - number sense, equations, functions, graphing, geometry, fractions, decimals, and more.
I teach Monday - Friday. Please contact me to request times (include time zone) and days available.
I retired from teaching school after 39 years, but I'm not tired of teaching. I've been on Outschool since the fall of 2020. My various degrees include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, a Masters degree in Mathematics Education, a Math Specialist enhanced level 2, and an ESL endorsement. My teaching experiences include grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th for 30 years. I then moved to the middle school and taught 7th and 8th grade for nine years.
