US Grade 4 - 7
Thank you for your interest in my class Writing Rocks! Writing is often a challenge for students; the combination of correct grammar and organized information can be a lot to learn. The class Writing Rocks! would combine the practices of diagramming and writing to improve understanding of how to write interesting, grammatically correct sentences. I was a Language Arts and Social Students teacher for over 25 years and use a combination of teaching concepts, diagramming, and student practice to improve writing skills. During each class, students would take notes on new concepts and practice writing their own sentences. Students will also work on peer editing their classmates work which helps their classmates while improving their own understanding. Since the class will be small, the pacing of the class will follow the students' understanding of the materials; however, the overall plan is as follows: Classes 1 - 3 -Writing Rocks! would start with the "basics" of grammar (parts of speech and how they are used in a sentence). At the same time, students would learn how to diagram sentences as a way to think about and check sentence structure. Classes 4 - 5 - Students would learn to correctly punctuate and combine short sentences into longer sentences to avoid choppy writing. Classes 6 - 8 - After students have learned the way that words in the sentences work together, the next step is learning how to write and diagram the different types sentences (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex). Most middle and high school students are busy with school and extra activities so Writing Rocks! would only meet once a week. Since the class meets only once a week, there would be homework to review and maintain understanding of the concepts that we worked on during class. Students would analyze sentences from the class and also write their own sentences. Homework is not meant to exceed an additional hour a week; if students are having difficulty understanding the assignment, they are welcome to email me for a little help outside of class hours.
Learning Goals
Students would learn to write the best possible simple, compound, or complex sentences. Diagramming would provide them with a structure to check and improve their sentences.
