US Grade 6 - 9
After spending a decade in the secondary English classroom and several years in between tutoring learners preparing to take various tests, from end-of-year assessments to college entrance exams, it has been my consistent observation that much of the difficulty and frustration students face stems from gaps in knowledge of basic elements of grammar. A thorough understanding of grammar and sentence structure extends beyond being able to label a noun as a "person, place, or thing" and a verb as "an action word". For every noun, verb, adjective, and adverb, there are multiple intricacies involving their role in the sentence and how it directly impacts other players in the sentence. Being able to identify these roles and understand their contextual place in the sentence is all too often the "aha!" moment many students need to finally put the pieces together and understand how language works. And once this has been achieved, everything from classroom essays to standardized tests become substantially more clear. If it's not already evident, I'm fascinated by grammar and the many stations the same word can play in a sentence. I hope to offer some clarity that will prove endlessly beneficial in your learner's academic pursuits. Don't hesitate to message me if you have any concerns. If the schedule listed does not work for your learner, I'm happy to offer one-on-one sections of this course. Message me, and we will see what we can work out!
Learning Goals
Students will receive a comprehensive overview of grammar with a focus on how nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and various types of clauses and phrases function in a sentence. Students will become more effective writers and speakers through their enhanced knowledge of English grammar. Students will also be better equipped for tests such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and state exams.
