Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 3
In this flexible schedule course, students will learn all about the basic parts of speech, "nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns" using images and video clips from the movie, Frozen. Students will watch mini-lessons about each part of speech, complete activities and short assignments, and will engage in conversations with the teacher and other learners through the Outschool platform and Nearpod. This class does not meet in the live classroom. This type of schedule allows students to participate at their convenience. Each week, the teacher will post a question for the group to think about on Monday. Students may write or record their responses and post them to our discussion board. Each week, a short quiz will be available for students to complete after finishing the material. This is a great way to check for understanding. Week 1: Students will be introduced to the flexible schedule class format. They will then watch a pre-recorded mini-lesson about nouns. Students will then have access to this week's powerpoint, discussion questions, draw it tools, and audio recording tools, allowing them to complete the activities presented throughout the powerpoint. Students will be asked to complete a "noun scavenger hunt". They will take a virtual field trip to Disney's Frozen 2 ride (youtube), identifying the nouns that they see throughout the video clip. They will also watch a short part of the movie, "Frozen 2" as they continue their search for nouns. They will be able to identify singular, plural, common, and proper nouns. Students will then create a sentence, highlighting the noun that they used, to be shared with students on the classroom board. Week 2: Students will be introduced to adjectives through a pre-recorded video mini-lesson. They will continue their "scavenger hunt", searching for adjectives from the given materials. They will have access to this week's powerpoint/Nearpod lesson and will complete short response questions, a "describe it" game, and will work on creating their own sentences, highlighting the adjectives. Students will be given the chance to share their sentences on the Outschool discussion board. Week 3: Students will be introduced to verbs. They will watch a pre-recorded mini-lesson about verbs. As they watch the powerpoint, they will collect verbs. Students will use their knowledge of verbs to write a short paragraph, using the Frozen characters and images as their inspiration. They will identify the actions used by the characters, highlight the verbs in their sentences, and add to their verbs to our discussion board. Week 4: Students will be introduced to pronouns. They will watch a mini-lesson. Students will work on replacing the nouns in each of the teacher's sentences with a pronoun. They will be given access to this week's powerpoint which allows students to identify the pronouns in each Frozen image, write sentences highlighting the pronoun, and create their own image and sentence to show their understanding. Students will continue their scavenger hunt by adding any pronouns that they find throughout class to their worksheet. During their week four lesson, students will be asked to reflect upon all four parts of speech, "nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns." In our final week, a kahoot game will be available for students to complete, as a cumulative assessment of their skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

I believe that students succeed when they are engaged, valued, and when lessons are personalized in some way to each individual student. During each lesson, I use positive reinforcement and gentle guidance to ensure students feel safe sharing their ideas. I strive to foster an inclusive and relaxed classroom environment and encourage students to participate, learn from each other, and have fun with the materials.
I am excited to get the opportunity to teach your child, and hope to see them in the classroom soon!
