US Grade 9 - 11
Intermediate Level
In this 1-hour class, students will learn the advanced punctuation rules covered on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. This class is designed for students in 9-12th grade; however, students in 7th or 8th grade may take the course if preparing for the PSAT, SAT, or ACT. Topics Discussed 1. Commas for appositives and nonrestrictive clauses 2. Commas and coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) 3. Semicolons (to join independent clauses and in complex lists) 4. Colons 5. Dashes During the class, students will be presented with multiple choice practice problems. To build students' confidence with the skills, students will respond to these questions in the chat. Students may respond directly to the teacher or to everyone. Students are also welcome to unmute and ask questions. Depending on the size of the class and the students' needs, we may use IXL for bonus practice questions if time permits. Students will be provided with a study sheet with practice problems and reminders covered in the session. Please note that the goal of this class is to help students practice these skills in a multiple choice format like on the PSAT, SAT, or ACT, so students will not be writing their own sentences. We will not be covering other grammar or reading skills. This class will solely focus on punctuation rules. If you're interested in other test-prep skills, please reach out to me, as I have other classes that might be a better fit.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes correctly in order to prepare for the PSAT, SAT, or ACT multiple choice questions.
