US Grade 3 - 6
This class will be a review of basic parts of speech while demonstrating how to diagram the sentence. Although it is not required that students have prior knowledge of nouns and verbs, it would aid their understanding of the material. If a student is already writing advanced sentences, this class would be too basic for them. Week 1 will be focused on introducing the basic parts of speech and making sure that students can identify them in a sentence (nouns, verbs, modifiers, etc.). We will then move on to understanding how these parts of speech are used in a sentence and how they relate to each other (simple subjects, objects, predicates, etc.). Week 2 will be focusing on learning to diagram the sentences as a method of checking that your sentence is a sentence. Week 3 will be focused on students writing their own sentences and using their diagramming skills to check their sentence. The class will be taught with a combination of in-class explanations and demonstrations and in-class practice sentences. Students will usually be working with the whole class or individually but will occasionally have the chance to work in small groups. By the end of the 9 sessions, students should understand the basic parts of a simple sentence and the ability to determine if their own basic sentences are correct. Although it is not required that students have prior knowledge of nouns and verbs, it would aid their understanding of the material. If a student is already writing advanced sentences, this class would be too basic for them.
Learning Goals
By the end of the 9 sessions, students should understand the basic parts of a simple sentence (subject, verb, objects) and the ability to diagram basic sentences. This knowledge will help them determine if their own basic sentences are correct which will improve their writing skills.
