Can your learner differentiate between the words "lie" and "lay"? "Accept" and "except"? How about the infamous "who" vs "whom"? Whether the goal is to improve their writing skills or one day ace the SAT exam, middle-schoolers will want to take this class. Each week, students will learn the definitions, parts of speech, and spelling of four sets of commonly confused words. I will begin each class with a warm-up to pre-assess student knowledge of the day's words. Then, using Google Slides, I will present each set of words, including how to properly use each word in a sentence and tips for remembering correct usage. Students will spend the remaining time reviewing the words and writing their own sentences using the words. I will allow time for students to share their sentences for peer and teacher feedback. I recommend students have a notebook so they can take notes as I present each set of words. To help students review the words presented in class, I will post a multiple-choice quiz using Google Forms in the Classroom. My classes are highly interactive, engaging, and fun! Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and ask questions. No prior knowledge is required, but an interest in words is helpful.
