Beginner Level
Students will learn and review basic to intermediate grammar and practice writing a variety of academic writing styles, including compare/contrast, persuasive, descriptive, narrative, analytical, and problem/solution. Students will practice grammar skills after explicit grammar instruction, modeling by teacher, and using 'mentor sentences.' Practice will include students identifying correct and incorrect grammar and writing specific examples of grammar being studied, such as sentence structure, phrases and clauses, passive v. active voice, subordinating conjunctions, correct punctuation usage, correct agreement, and appositives. Each class will include a five minute warm-up, twenty-five minutes of grammar instruction/practice, and thirty minutes of writing instruction/practice.
