US Grade 5
This course covers the basic content of fifth grade math and is geared toward typical math students or those who need a little extra help or review. Contact me anytime to discuss your student's specific needs. This ongoing course features three sessions per week, following the below format: Session 1 (Monday in US/Canada/UK) Core Lesson The Core Lesson is structured by the gradual release of responsibility model: teacher instruction, guided practice, and independent work. The teacher will support students by encouraging higher order thinking in addition to reaching the correct answer. Every student will have the opportunity to interact with the teacher individually, and all questions will be answered before the teacher ends the meeting. Session 2 (Wednesday in US/Canada/UK) Problem Solving The Problem Solving session continues the work from the previous session. Students will continue to practice the skill at either a basic or advanced level, depending upon their performance over the course of the week. The teacher will differentiate instruction by scaffolding as much or as little as necessary as students build independence with the learning objective. Session 3 (Friday in US/Canada/UK) Jeopardy The Jeopardy session caps off the week by engaging students in a cumulative math review that supports retention of the skills learned in this course. Each student plays their own personalized game to ensure they are working within their zone of proximal development. The teacher will prioritize student understanding by taking the time to discuss challenging questions. Schedule: NOTE: This ongoing course operates on a 16-week cycle. Students may join at any point during a course cycle, remaining in the course for two cycles to equate to a school year, or one cycle for more advanced students. No prior knowledge of fifth grade math is necessary.
