Bud, Not Buddy is about an African American child traversing the foster system in Jim Crow-era Michigan. Bud is treated very poorly by his foster family and one of his foster brothers beats him up. Though this book is geared towards this age group, it does not shy away from the struggles of being an African American foster child in the 1930s.

Throughout Flora and Ulysses, the main character traverses the changing landscape of her life as her parents are divorcing.
