The unit makes a connection between previously learned narrative writing skills and continues to build on these skills in writing. The class introduces the students to the writing workshop structure and helps students develop writing strategies and skills in developing strong storytelling writing skills. Students learn to generate ideas for writing and adapting a fairy tale, to make a plan, and carry out their writing task. As an elementary classroom/ special education teacher, teaching and Adapting Fairy Tales writing unit is a good way to revive interest in writing throughout the year. The students are able to tell and adapt stories about Fairy Tales and share them with their classmates. This unit of study helps the young writers to continue to develop their writing skils and confidence in narrative writing. I have seen students achieve success and growth with learning in adapting fairy tales using the narrative craft in story telling and writing.
