In this five-day summer camp, students will discover the joys and the horrors of gothic literature by reading five classic gothic short stories. Students will read the assigned stories before class. During class, we will explore different aspects of each text, including: - The characteristics of the gothic genre. - Themes explored in each text. - How authors create a creepy atmosphere in their stories - How the key literary elements of setting, character, plot, theme, point of view, and...
- Students will know the key characteristics of the gothic genre and be able to identify these in different texts. - Students will be able to explain how the key literary elements of setting, character, plot, theme, point of view, and style contribute to each story. - Students will deepen their thinking about the themes explored in the five texts. - Students will leave the course with ideas for other gothic texts they would like to explore.
To allow plenty of time for discussion during class time, students will be expected to come to each class having read that day's assigned short story. These stories should take no more than an hour to read, usually less.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
A defining feature of gothic literature is elements that most people find creepy or scary. Most of the stories in this course include elements such as ghosts and murder, and many characters behave extremely immorally. If there are particular stories you are concerned about, students may skip the lessons for those particular stories, although please note that I am unable to provide refunds in this situation.
All of the texts in this course are in the public domain. Copies of all stories will be provided at the beginning of the course.
