In this 1-time class we will go over the basics of DNA and Genetics. In our technology-progressing world kids are more and more anxious to understand what adults mean when they talk about DNA and gene traits. This class will include a very brief and simple introduction to the structure of DNA and the probability of genes being passed on. I like to use interactive PowerPoint slides which can be found through www.nearpod.com. As class begins I will supply the code for the class so that students can type in the code to view the slideshow. This will help them to answer questions and play the games associated with the slides. The slides will also include video clips and discussion amongst the students. During the second half of the class and to help students understand the structure of DNA, we will be building tasty models out of candy! Students will do this by using a key (included in the links affiliated with this class). If you have a hard time finding the links please send me a message after signing up and I will be happy to send those to you! Giving the students a list of traits, they will use the key to build their delicious DNA model.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic structure of DNA and how genes are randomly passed on

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
I am in love with biology and teach it in a variety of classes including General Biology, Botany, Entomology, Ecology & the Environment, and Indoor Gardening. I received a B.S. degree in Environmental Science from Brigham Young University, as well as a M.S. degree in Biology (also from BYU) with an emphasis in Plant Genetics. In addition, I also teach Arabic writing, language and cultural classes. I grew up in Saudi Arabia, speak the language, and Im in love with the Arab world. I have taught children and youth in all backgrounds and all ages over the past 14 years.
I believe that in order for teaching to be effective, it has to be fun. I love to involve students. In my biology courses I do this by having hands-on experiments, keeping a science journal, and giving them time outside of classes to spend time with nature. For Arabic, I involved students with giving them time to practice their conversation skills! I also am a firm believer that we humans learn by repetition, so I try to incorporate principles we learn from previous classes throughout our course to help solidify their learning.
Fun facts about me? My mother is Polynesian, my dad is American, and (like I mentioned above) I grew up in Saudi Arabia! I am in love with the Middle East, and really people of all ethnic backgrounds. This is manifest by the fact that I have an obsession with travelling. I have been to every continent (minus Antarctica) and am always excited to learn more about people and cultures of the world.
