6 live meetings
5 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Week one of this course will be a mixture of lecture and discussion during which we'll go over what to expect in a college audition, how to prepare for one, and what common mistakes to avoid. Week two will consist of monologue rehearsal during which students will work on memorization techniques and receive feedback about their choice of monologues. Week three will consist of a mock audition during which students will present their monologues as if they were in a college audition setting and receive one more round of feedback. In weeks two and three especially, my presence will be as a facilitator and a director. I encourage all students to participate in discussion and feedback, I believe some of the best learning in theatre happens through conversation.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about what they can expect from an audition setting, what casting directors expect from them, and how they can make the most out of a short monologue.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be asked to independently research two monologues that they will perform for class. The plays they pull these from may contain topics of a sensitive nature such as suicide, mental illness, sexuality, or abuse. Broadly speaking, I would like to leave monologue selection up to student and parent discretion as I believe actors should have a personal connection to their monologues, but I am more than happy to provide guidance towards age-appropriate material as needed.
Supply List
Students will need a way to take notes during the lecture and feedback portions of the class. Monologues can generally be found online (I will be providing guidance on how to search for them), but if necessary I can also provide excerpts from my own library of published plays.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
