45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
This is a student-led book club. During each class meeting, learners will share about what they're currently reading, giving a casual oral book review. Other learners can ask questions and compare ideas and opinions about the books under discussion. Bring the book you're currently reading to class with you, along with any others you've recently read and may want to share. If you are 10 - 13 years old and love to read and share, you are welcome to join this club! (NOTE: We need a minimum of 3 learners in order to run this class. In the event that there are fewer than 3 learners, I will cancel that week's class and refund enrollment fees for that week.) ***Each week, we'll establish reading goals for the upcoming week, based on the needs and levels of learners. *Come to each class meeting with a brief book excerpt to share. This excerpt can be from something you're reading or have recently read, and should be a part of the book that you find particularly inspiring in some way. While this is a student led club, the teacher will ask questions to guide readers into easy-going literary discussions around: -literary elements -author's craft, style, and tone -elements of plot: exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, etc. -character development, analysis, and description - literary devices like simile, metaphor, symbolism, tone, mood, and imagery. -the effect of figurative, descriptive, and sensory language, etc. In answering questions about their books, students will practice: -paraphrasing and direct quotation -summarization -citing evidence from the text At the beginning of each meeting, we'll introduce ourselves and discuss our preferred authors, genres, and settings for reading. I'll share with learners a document to guide their future book reviews. Students will share and discuss their excerpts and weekly reading We will ask and answer questions, and discuss literary topics. Reading goals will be set for the upcoming week. Once everyone has had a chance to share, casual conversation is encouraged because this is a social club! **Important Note: While students are free to select their own books, care must be taken to avoid those with content that may be seen as age inappropriate for many families, such as sexual content, violence, cruelty, content with a specific religious or political perspective, or other highly sensitive issues. Parents and their learners should communicate before class about the books the learner intends to share, assuring that content remains within these bounds. - If a student brings content that to class that violates the guidelines stated above, I will request that the student not share information about that content and will communicate with that student's parents to resolve the issue. If a parent or student has issues with any approved book content that is shared in class, please notify me directly so we can find a solution to the issue.
