Description
Class Experience
This 4-week FLEX course teaches about decimals, ratios, percentages, and proportions. Specifically, decimal conversions from fractions, percentages, conversations between per cents and fractions and percents and decimals, ratios, ratio equivalencies, proportions, constants of proportionality, and word problems with percentages, proportions, and ratios. With Pre-Algebra, mastery has to be the goal. And the right teacher knows she can get your learner there. You, as a parent or as a learner,...
At the end of this Flex Class, your student will be able to say: "I can identify decimals on a number line." "I can give place values for each digit for a decimal" "I can round decimals" "I can put decimals in expanded notation" "I can compare decimals" "I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals" "I understand ratios and how they are applied" "I can use ratios to determine rates "I can apply percentages to a word problem" "I can convert a percentage to a fraction or decimal and back to percentages again." "I can do word problems with decimals, fractions, ratio's and percents." "I understand proportions and constants of proportionality." ""I can solve problems with proportions."
I've been certified in the public schools for teaching math in middle and high schools. I received additional certified training for gifted and talented learners. I taught math for sixteen years and I've been a personal SAT tutor for seven years. My students have typically raised their scores between 100 and 300 points. As a chemical engineer and project management professional in the world of business consulting and information technology consulting, I've completed over five levels of college calculus and applied mathematics and used these math and computing skills throughout my career. The students I have taught had varying learning abilities that ranged from one with pronounced learning disabilities to gifted and talented. When it came to PSAT's and SAT's, each of them with impressive improvements in their scores. It can be done! I used a focused approach. We honed in on trouble areas, really understood the underlying math concept, and drilled for mastery.
The class is designed for the student to complete all of their work in class. Additional problems are provided for students who need additional practice for mastery.
Paper, pencil, and a brain ready for thinking fun!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
On the last week of each level is an assessment for the content of that level. Feel free as a homeschooled parent to use those assessments to calculate your child's grade. Or, if your learner is not homeschooled, feel free to use those assessments to benchmark how well your learner is doing. I include the assessment as part of the forth week of each level. However, if I were teaching the course to a class, this assessment would take an extra week of time for study review and proctoring. I leave that up to the parent and learner. If you feel you need an extra week, the material will still be available for you work work on through the Nearpod links, and you can simply take an extra week before signing up for the next level.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Your student should be comfortable with standard elementary math concepts using operations and fractions.
Students will see the lessons on Nearpod which will not require logging in to view. Students should have the ability to use their mouse and/or keyboard to annotate.
