Goddess Girls is a children's series by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams where Greek mythology gets a contemporary twist as the four friends - Athena, Persephone, Aphrodite and Artemis - navigate their friendship and adventures at Mount Olympus Academy. Here, Zeus is the principal. In this fun on-going weekly class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions and engaging activities. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. It is highly recommended that students have their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class, to make the most of the discussions. However, all are welcome. Whether your student has never heard of Greek mythology or is an enthusiastic fan of heroes, this class will be full of fun for all. We will explore the text and its themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities, for instance through short writing or an art work. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion. Instructor will also read aloud important or exciting parts during class to enrich the discussion. Each book will be discussed for 2 weeks to thoroughly cover its content. A Certificate of Completion will be provided at the end of the Book Club program. Students may join as many or as little of the book club sessions, as they wish. While some content and books might build upon each other, the instructor welcomes all new students who join in at any time and will try to fill them in with information and Greek mythology so that they do not feel lost. No evaluation is included in this engaging book club, however, for special requests, please message Ms. Stephenie and something can be arranged.
Learning Goals
Students are encouraged to practice reading skills, listening skills, communication skills, and sharing skills with each other. The class will allow students to discuss with the teacher and each other what they learned about each character, what they thought was interesting, and the course encourages creativity in the art or short writing assignment at the end of the discussions each week.
