This course is designed to allow the student to be involved in the design and the decisions surrounding their personal goal. This course will have minimal students in order to effectively interact and assist students with their activity and goal setting. The students will engage with me, the facilitator, and negotiate the wellness topic and learning materials. Together, we will structure classtime around planning/warmup (5 min), goal setting (5-10 min), practice (10-15 min), application...
Students will begin to learn and apply a self-direct learning format across any skill, idea, concept, or discipline through a lens or focus on wellness education. Even though this is a broad concept, the student becomes invested immediately as they get to be involved in their learning. The students will learn basic goal setting skills based on a formative assessment from the facilitator. Students will learn to apply their wellness learning concept, practice, and improve the skill after learning the proper techniques and how to research more information to expand, simplify, or adapt the skill. Students will also be given a coaching review session to push further thinking or assist with a practice schedule of the topic beyond the class meeting.
Students want to be involved in their own learning. Many instructors do not teach much self-directed learning because the power of the lesson is shared and the instructor must be adaptable in the "now" of the lesson. I am a great teacher for this class as I am adaptable and want to afford students the power to speak up about their learning. Learning should be fun and many times its not fun when someone else decides what you are going to learn. Students are more invested and motivated in their learning when the instructor role is a facilitator/coach. I hold an intrinsic coaching certification, have played and coached multiple athletics, was a dual collegiate all-american athlete, and have held a K-12 PE/Health Licensure for 13 years while teaching PE, Health, and Higher Education courses.
There will be no homework assigned, but the facilitator may make suggestions to improve the student's skill. It is the student's responsibility to be motivated and improve their learning or skill, i.e. self-directed intrinsic motivation.
3 files available upon enrollmentA goal setting sheet will be provided by the teacher as a model for students, but it is used as more of a guide. The only material you may need handy is duct tape and any balls or sporting equipment you have. We will make use of what the student has in the home with permission of the parent and possibly manufacture toys or practice materials.
Learner progress can be assessed by the goal setting materials and formative assessments will be made during the practice and application session of the class period. Parents can request a progress grade and rubric after completion of the class if needed for curriculum completion. Thank you for understanding that I cannot provide a rubric upfront as each lesson will be different for each child.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
All interactive content is appropriate for all levels.
