1 hour per week. Read all assigned poems ahead of class time. Come prepared to discuss themes, literary devices and feelings related to poems.

Class Experience

This 4 session class will break each session into a different geographic region of the world to introduce a specific, world famous poet to students. We will begin each session with a brief look into the poet's biography and geography before looking at and tying in their works to it. We will be discussing poems using the lens of literary terms, poetic devices, figurative language and meanings. Join us on a global trek of poets and poetry from around the world as we traverse the literary lands of geniuses through our minds!
Students should be proficient readers to take this class. No homework or out of class work required. All classes will be run using the Socratic Seminar format- which means live discussions will be held and all participants will be required to speak and discuss. 
Class 1: " A Poison Tree" -- William Blake (England)
Class 2: "Coromandel Fishers" -- Sarojini Naidu (India)
Class 3: Haiku selections -- Matsuo Basho (Japan)
Class 4: "Rubayyat" -- Omar Khayyam (Persia)

All students will be encourages to participate and share their thoughts.

Learning Goals

Students will increase their knowledge of literary terms and poetic devices through discussing poems and the lives of poets from around the world. 
Students will learn to parse a poem and share their knowledge of themes and meanings as derived from their readings. 
Students will learn to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the poet says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the poem. 
Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the poem, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Shaheen and I look forward to meeting you all virtually. I've been teaching language arts and the humanities for over 25 years in public, private and charter schools to elementary, middle and high school students. I also homeschool my own four children, and I am an education consultant for other homeschooling families. My expertise is in teaching the humanities and literature classes for middle and high school aged kids. I offer classes in the Socratic Seminar style for kids as young as 4th graders. Holding an M.S. in Education and a certification in teaching ESL, I am happy to bring the love of learning to your kids. 
My goals, with teaching students, are to make them life long learners and passionate about education. I enjoy teaching poetry, literature, logic and the classics and I hope to pass this love of language on to my students!
