Class Experience

Every day, someone, somewhere in the world, is celebrating a holiday! In a world of 200 countries, there are many reasons to celebrate. In this ongoing class, learners will meet my magical cat (puppet) Sam, who is very curious about the world's holidays. We'll follow Sam on a brief multimedia adventure as we learn what holiday is being celebrated that week, where on the globe we can find the country in which it is celebrated, and how people celebrate the holiday. We'll finish our time together any number of ways, with a song, a dance, a craft, or more! It all depends on the holiday.

Our adventures begin with the following schedule:
Week of August 29: Baloch-Pashtun Unity Day (Afghanistan)
Week of September 5: Our Lady of Victories (Malta)
Week of September 12: Heroes Day (Angola)
Week of September 19: Children's Day (Germany)
Week of September 26: Mid-Autumn Festival (China)
Week of October 3: Sports Day (Lesotho)
Week of October 10: Fiji Day (Fiji)
Week of October 17: Dessalines Day (Haiti)
Week of October 24: Constitution Day (Lithuania)
Week of October 31: Guy Fawkes Day (United Kingdom)
Week of November 7: Opera Day (Hungary)
Week of November 14: Peace Day (Côte d'Ivoire)

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
[Pronouns: they/he] My goal as an educator is to inspire curiosity, compassion, and creativity in the next generation of global citizens. I have 20 years of experience in various educational settings, including a daycare, two children's museums, a storyteller's stage, two university tutoring centers, and online as a teacher of English as a second language. I hold a BA in creative writing with a minor in studio arts from Metropolitan State University (St. Paul).

I offer classes that embody my passions: travel, storytelling, history, literature, science, art, and early-childhood education. My teaching style is marked by patience, gentleness, and humor—less Elmo, more Mister Rogers. I believe it is essential for children to learn the importance of asking "why." My greatest asset as a teacher is adapting quickly to the needs and skills of my students.

Beyond teaching, i am a published essayist and poet. I currently reside in Minneapolis. My interests include linguistics, travel, volunteering, heraldry, graphic design, video games, and caring for my pet lovebird, Buddy.
