If you are a reader, you love seeing the setting, characters and situations in your head. Oral interpretation gives us the ability to let others envision the literature from the author's point of view, but with an extra advantage: They Get It! Oh, and did I mention that you do also? Learning how to read aloud to fully illustrate the story allows us to really understand what is going on and how each character fits into the action. Below is the breakdown for each week of class. I hope you can join us for this class that will not only teach you new things, but enhance your enjoyment of literature! Week 1 - Introduce the basics of oral interpretation - How it differs from acting - Participate in exercises to show differences Week 2 - Learn to analyze the literature - Who is speaking? - Where is this taking place and what is happening? - What style of language is used (does it rhyme, etc.)? - Exercises/games to reinforce lesson Week 3 - Preparing the Material - Determining if cutting the material is necessary - Creating an introduction - Getting the audience's attention - Author, title, background - Setting the scene - Making it relatable - Exercises/games Week 4 - Using our voices and bodies for oral interpretation - Sense recall - Body recall - Use of voice - Use of body - Eye focus - Exercises/games Week 5 - Preparing and marking our scripts - Practice time - Silently - Aloud - Receive feedback from teacher Week 6 - Practice alone; for your classmates - Receive final tips - Performance!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I teach/direct students age 6-college and have been doing that in various positions for over 20 years. The classes I've taught have covered characterization, staging, improvisation, script-writing, etc.
I am the former Education Director at Germantown Community Theatre, and have also taught/directed high school, junior college, and summer theatre programs.
I absolutely love watching students grow as they participate in theatre. There is really nothing else that challenges them on so many levels including creativity, critical thinking, self-confidence, teamwork, communication skills, time management, focus, as well as learning about literature, author's intent, and the list goes on...
Decades ago, when I finished my student teaching experience I vowed I would never have anything to do with teaching children again... Haha! Never say never :)
