Class Experience

*Books required for class, see below*

This class will combine reading and science by reading one "Girls Survive" book each week while learning about the natural disaster in that book. The series is called "Girls Survive," but all are welcome!

FOR LEARNERS:
1. to learn more about science (specifically, natural disasters)
2. to learn through reading
3. who own or are willing to buy or borrow four "Girls Survive" books (listed below)

CLASS STRUCTURE & CONTENT:
Learners will be expected to read one "Girls Survive" book (approximately 120 pages) each week independently. In our first class of the week, learners will learn the basics of the natural disaster in that week's book and in the second class, we will focus on the book itself. I will give learners time to talk freely about the book, then I'll have comprehension and discussion questions for them.

REQUIRED READING & MATERIALS:
Please purchase or borrow the books ahead of each week as follows:
Week 1: Earthquakes "Lily and the Great Quake: A San Francisco Earthquake Survival Story" by Veeda Bybee
Week 2: Volcanoes "Maribel Versus the Volcano: A Mount St. Helens Survival Story" by Sarah Hannah Gómez
Week 3: Tsunamis "Tara and the Towering Wave: An Indian Ocean Tsunami Survival Story" by Cristina Oxtra
Week 4: Hurricanes "Carrie and the Great Storm: A Galveston Hurricane Survival Story" by Jessica Gunderson

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As of February 18, 2022, I will only be teaching flexible schedule classes.

EXPERIENCE: I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2010 and have been teaching ever since. I have an Ohio teaching license that includes PreK - Grade 5 plus TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) for K-12. I taught in public schools from 2010 to 2017, which included substitute teaching then teaching reading and math in a primary school. In 2017, I began teaching online full time.

ENGLISH CLASSES: When I teach English, my style is to teach it in a natural way, without forcing my students to do grammar drills or memorize. Instead, they acquire the English language by using it. (I use the Communicative Approach to language teaching.) I use a variety of resources in my lessons so that my students are exposed to English in many contexts. My classes focus on reading and speaking skills.

LITERATURE AND GEOGRAPHY: I love reading, geography, and travel, so I teach courses based on these topics as well. I try to take common interests and help students learn from them. My teaching style is relaxed. I hope all learners will feel comfortable in my classes. In my book discussion groups, I always have one topic of the day and give students free time to discuss the topic, then I have questions ready to further guide discussion.

PERSONAL: To introduce myself personally, I am married and live in Ohio. My hobbies include going to restaurants, walking with friends, running, traveling and reading, and I also love trying new things. My second language is Spanish, and I am currently learning Japanese.

COMMUNICATION: I strive to respond to messages in a timely manner. During the week, I will respond within 24 hours, usually much less. Depending on my schedule, I may not be able to respond directly before class. Please send a message to support@outschool.com if you need help accessing the classroom.
