In this four-week course, students will have the opportunity to read the oldest epic tale in world literature. Here we will learn early understandings of justice, mortality, and value in life.

Over these four weeks, we will read Gilgamesh and discuss key themes. The poem is divided into 12 tablets. Students must complete the readings in advance and be prepared to discuss.

Week #1
-We will read and discuss Tablets 1-2
-Gilgamesh begins his story as a ruthless king of Uruk. The gods first civilize Enkidu, and then send him to fight Gilgamesh. As the two fight, they become friends.

Week #2
-We will read and discuss Tablets 3-5
-Gilgamesh and Enkidu go on a quest into the Cedar Forest in order to bring valuable lumber back to Uruk. There they must fight the legendary monster Humbaba, who lives where no mortal may enter.

Week #3
-We will read and discuss Tablets 6-8
-The goddess Ishtar sends the Bull of Heaven to attack Gilgamesh. While Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the bull, it leads to disastrous consequences for their fate.

Week #4
-We will read and discuss Tablets 9-11
-The story concludes with Gilgamesh's quest for immortality as he visits Utnapishtim, the sole survivor of the world-wide flood.
