Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This class is all about giving! The best presents are those from the heart, and there is nothing that people need more than knowing how much they are loved and appreciated. Take this opportunity to write and revise a piece of writing that you can give to a loved one as a gift for an upcoming holiday, birthday, or just because.

Maybe you want to compose a poem or write about a favorite memory in memoir form. Maybe you want to write a fiction story or a pretend interview. The possibilities are endless and are up to you. I can help you brainstorm, plan, revise, edit, and POLISH your piece so that it is "gift ready". Imagine how happy your mom, dad, grandparent, aunt, uncle, best friend, pet, or that person you think could just use a pick-me-up will be when they see you took the time to create something special for them!

This course is self-directed in that each learner will be working on their own piece. Each class, I will give a short mini-lesson that can help with the process. It is ok to start midway through the cycle because each class there will be plenty of time for students to get meaningful help on their own piece.

Mini-lesson cycle
Class 1: Discuss ideas and types of writing. Focused mini-lesson with example of Free verse poetry
Class 2: Progress check in. Focused mini-lesson with example of Narrative writing
Class 3: Progress check in. Focused mini-lesson/mentor text on using and revising for sensory details
Class 4: Progress check in. Focused mini-lesson/mentor text on intros/leads and conclusions
Class 5: Progress check in. Focused mini-lesson on breaking lines/stanzas in poetry and brainstorming great titles
Class 6: Revising, Cutting to the Bone, Polishing/presentation ideas

Students can join this class at any time and will be able to work on their own writing pieces. The mini-lessons covered are relevant regardless of where you are in the process.

Learning Goals

Students will learn writing techniques for both narrative and poetry. They will learn the importance and necessity of the revision process in order to make a piece of writing the best it can be, and will learn techniques to write with feeling.

Parental Guidance
Students may choose to use Google classroom or Canva to work on and share their writing pieces. An account for either of these is not required to attend this class, however. If a student does not have access or would rather work on paper or another way, that is fine. I will also be using screen-share to show examples and instruction.
Supply List
Learners will need a paper and pen or a computer document to write on.
