Class Experience

Who ya gonna call?! That's a good question...where should someone start if they want to go into business for themselves? This self-paced course is a fun approach to reviewing what it takes to successfully plan, start, market, and run your own business, using "Ghostbusters" as a model. This is a primer for students that think they may want to develop specific skills that can be used to start their own business--it is also a shameless love letter to a great film. We will look at what Dr. Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler did initially to get the business up and running, and any of the pitfalls associated with keeping it going. I hope you join in on the fun!

For each class, students will view the content video and can then submit any questions via classroom messaging--while asynchronous, I will be available throughout the course to answer any questions from students or parents within a timely manner. Since most of the videos exceed the size limit available for upload to Outschool, I am posting them on a private YouTube channel made only for my classes, and then each video will be embedded within the classroom--at no point will students leave the OutSchool learning platform.

I am on Eastern Standard Time, which doesn't matter as much with this being a self-paced class, but am most available from 7:00am - 8:00pm (EST) for correspondence. I will offer staggered sections so you can enroll during a period that works best for you!

*NOTE* This is not meant to be a truly comprehensive course on actually starting a business, but rather a fun observation and analysis of what we can learn from the Ghostbusters in terms of what one should consider when attempting to do so. Many of the steps are not dissimilar to what I do as a tutor and contract teacher—marketing to maintain interest, following certain regulations, paperwork, start up money, etc. Additionally, I've had students do a "start up business" project in my class for years now.

My Master's Degree is in Education; I have taught high school English and various electives, including AP English: Language & Composition and The Structure & Analysis of Film since 2008. Additionally I have worked on committees to ensure curriculum is up-to-date and meaningful, have mentored students during high school & as they prepare for college and/or the workforce, and have offered a variety of online classes since 2021.
