Getting to the Root of Words: Growing Strong in Vocabulary (FLEX) Part 1
What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. Participation in the classroom is expected during/after each session. I will also be posting encouragement and tips throughout the week, and learners can interact with each other in the classroom as they share their work and complete challenges.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 8
In this FLEX vocabulary class, we will explore common Greek and Latin root words, practice their meanings with fun challenges and activities, and learn how to apply this knowledge to deciphering unknown words. Each class, we will focus on 1-2 specific root words. I will present a video lesson each week, teaching all about a new root word. We will explore examples of the root word together, then create a word family organizer using related words to reflect on the root's meaning! Learners will share their organizers with their classmates in the classroom using a picture or video, so their classmates and I can offer feedback and see their progress. Students will work to make connections between the root word and their own experiences. Students will then have an opportunity to practice using each root's meaning in multiple ways (handouts, video discussion, chat/messaging discussion, Flipgrid, student-paced Nearpod presentations, online scavenger hunts and challenges, drawing, etc.) Video tutorial lessons will be added on Mondays at 8am EST. Since this is a flexible schedule class, there are no live meetings; however, I will be available to answer any questions, provide encouragement/support, and facilitate activities in the classroom throughout the four weeks. This is the biggest difference between my course and any other root words course you can find online! NOTE: Courses can be taken in any order or as a stand-alone class! Each course will offer 4 NEW Greek/Latin root words to study. Part 1 Course Schedule Week 1: Mono Week 2: Multi/Poly Week 3: Centr Week 4: Phil
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of Greek and Latin root words [Mono, Multi/Poly, Centr, Phil] and will be able to apply this information to deciphering unknown words.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will use YouTube, Flipgrid and Nearpod throughout the course. All sites will be accessible directly through the Outschool classroom.
For Nearpod, learners will be given a code each week to access the lesson, and they will not need an individual account.
Flipgrid will require a student account, and learners will be given a class code on the first day of class to connect to our group board. Please sign up at https://info.flip.com/, so your learner will be ready to begin. It's a very easy process, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have!
Weekly video tutorials are housed on YouTube and will be linked in the classroom. Learners may also access the internet/YouTube to help with class challenges.
Supply List
Paper and pencil will be needed for this course. I would recommend a composition book so all notes/activities can stay together.
