In this 2-week, small group tech class, budding podcasters and music producers will explore the sound editing app, Audacity®­, with the aim of creating their own multitrack mix or podcast.

Class Experience

Want to edit your own digital music tracks, podcasts or create an exciting soundscape? This 2-session tech class is a great introduction to digital sound editing, using the free sound editing app, Audacity®. 

Create, compose and edit your very own multi-layer track, ready for download! 

Session 1: Explore the software
In this session, we will explore the main Audacity® interface and editing tools.
Skills covered include:
•	Opening the app and saving a new Project file
•	Creating a new track (mono and stereo)
•	Importing sounds and existing music tracks
•	Recording from a microphone (balancing Input Gain)
•	Applying Sync Lock and practical tips for recording in sync
•	Click Tracks (music)
•	Saving your project and exporting as MP3

Session 2: Building the project
Skills covered include:
•	Opening an existing Project file
•	Using the editing tools, e.g. Trimming, Cutting and Pasting, adding Silence
•	Processing audio effects, e.g. Reverb
•	Balance and Panning
•	Saving your project and exporting as MP3

Students are welcome to request further sessions if they would like to take their skills further or if they would like support with a particular project.

PLEASE NOTE: Parents and guardians will need to download and install the free software, Audacity® and students should try and explore the software interfaces before the start of the first session. Students will not be able to engage in the sessions if they do not have access to the software. Likewise, it is essential that parents and guardians support students in downloading any relevant files needed for each class before the start of the session (posted 24 hours in advance). Parents and guardians should check before signing up to the course that they can download Audacity® and that the software runs on the student computer. 

*This class is best delivered with student video screens and sound on. Please do reach out via the OS messaging service if this would be an issue for your learner.

• Students will use the free audio editing software, Audacity®, to edit and manipulate a range of sound effects and short music clips. 
• Students will be shown how to create multi-layer tracks to use in their own videos and how to export their audio tracks as MP3 files.

PLEASE NOTE: Parents and guardians will need to download and install the free software, Audacity® and students should try and explore the software interfaces before the start of the first session. Parents and guardians should check before signing up to the course that they can download Audacity® and that the software runs on the student computer. The class is taught via on-screen demonstration - students will require a 2nd device to watch the lesson on. Students will also need access to sound effects which parents can download. The website www.zapsplat.com is great for accessing a range of sounds and parents are advised to create a free account to download a sample of sound effects/music before class. No payment details are required for the free sound downloads. (Alternative free sound effect libraries are available at https://sound-effects.bbcrewind.co.uk/search). You are advised to supervise your children if they are using online services to research and source sounds. There are many useful resources which offer guidance on how to keep your children safe online, such as https://www.childnet.com/parents-and-carers/parent-and-carer-toolkit.

Parents will need to have downloaded the free editing software, Audacity® before the start of the first class. Students would benefit from accessing the lesson on a separate device to the device used for the video and audio editing tasks as this will allow them to view the demonstrations as they complete their own tasks - they may also find it beneficial to use headphones during class.
