This three day camp will give horse enthusiasts a crash course on what you need to know in order to get read to ride a horse. We will meet for a lecture style class, watch video clips related to that day's topic and have print offs to fill out throughout camp. Day one will go over basic body language of a horse. We need to know how a horse is feeling when we are around them and working with them so we can stay safe around them. We will get to see how a horse tells us: where their attention is at, if they are nervous or relaxed, and what they do to tell us they are angry. These basic body signals are important to pay attention to, especially when we are grooming them or getting ready to saddle up and ride. A sheet will be provided to print out and color and match the term to the photo during class. Day two's class will cover the grooming tools and tips for success. Grooming has a bigger function than just cleaning off the horse. In class we will learn about other benefits of grooming your horse. Expect a video demonstration of how to properly groom a horse from start to finish. The worksheet provided will include a matching terms worksheet for items we learn in class. Day three we will watch video clips of how to apply both a western and an english saddle. We will discuss the similarities and differences between the two tack sets. Students will get a print out of a horse in English and Western tack to either name the tack pieces or color them. Day 1 (5.24.21) - Basic Body Language Day 2 (5.26.21) - Grooming Benefits and Tools Day 3 (5.28.21) - Tacking Up Western and English

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am happy to be able to provide some educational and fun classes to your child! These classes are all about horses and dogs! You can expect to see classes that focus on learning horse terminology, body language, basic riding tips, and how horses can help your child be emotionally self aware. I also will have classes about dogs including: reasons to get a dog, safety around handling a dog, and other fun dog facts!
I have a Bachelor's in Animal Science from New Mexico State University. I participated in horse related classes such as Fitting and Selling, Equine Reproduction, Reigning, Western Pleasure, and Management of Equine Operations.
I have 20 years of hands on experience with horses. I have spent accumulatively 3 years giving beginner and intermediate riding lessons to children ages 8-14 years old. I was a member of 4-H for 5 years. During this time I mentored those younger than me in the horse project. During my time in 4-H I did both the horse project and dog project so you can expect to see some dog related classes as well!
I have spent the last 4 years working as a Product Specialist for EasyCare, Inc. This company manufactures hoof boots and natural hoof care products for horses. I spend my days educating people about what boot might be right for their horse in their unique situation. I enjoy educating others as well as myself on the ever changing world of horses.
Horses are my passion. I love stirring this passion in others, especially kids. Horse's have a lot of offer us. Working horses has had a great impact on my character development, self awareness, patience, taking ownership of my own actions, communicating through body language, money management, and problem solving. Truly there are limitless ways horses help develop essential life skills and coping mechanisms. I want every child to have the chance to develop those skills in a fun environment.
