Class Experience

This course will help high school students better identify their areas of strength and weakness--and focuses on using strengths to accommodate weaknesses. This age range LIGHTLY encourages discussions of apps where they can be helpful for students that have them, but this will not dominate the conversation. We will be focusing on strengthening skills overall and will cover the following executive function areas, explaining each one with examples:

* Planning/prioritizing (with understanding of "important" vs. "urgent")
* Organization
* Time Management
* Task initiation
* Working memory
* Self-monitoring (metacognition)
* Flexibility
* Impulse control
* Emotional control

Each of these will be explained and an example given. Students will do an inventory of skills they are strong in and skills they are not so strong in. They will have homework that may require parent involvement/support and input to help students find new ways to accommodate their weaknesses by using their strengths in the context of their own world. This homework is a way to help them build self-advocacy skills.

Learning Goals

Students will learn multiple ways to improve their executive function skills in tangible ways they can implement in their daily lives.

I have taught executive function and productivity skills to my students and science team students for at least 10 years. These are an extension of project management, for which I have been certified at the highest level (PMP) since 2003 and have taught for the international certifying body (PMI). Since 2015, I have been coaching middle schoolers who are preparing for Science Olympiad competition with very little support--so these skills are critical and they have been wonderfully successful with my team!
