In the class, we will follow the adventures of Mr. Ethan Chessman and his three children as they outsmart various villains to protect their family's amazing invention. The book, A Whole Nother Story by Dr. Cuthbert Soup is a chapter book full of suspense and hilarious mishaps, not to mention a lot of "Unsolicited Advice". It is a very fun read for older elementary and preteen students and is probably unlike any other book that they have read. Through this story the students will nurture their own creativity through individual and group activities. They will give themselves new names, (to outsmart the bad guys), create fictitious villains, write about a time machine journey they would like to take, and give some of their own unsolicited advice. The class will focus on individual and collaborative ideas while exploring creativity in a fun learning atmosphere.
Learning Goals
Students will use their own imagination to expand on adventures in the book. They will be able to draw, write about and discuss creative ideas in an interactive environment. This class will provide a springboard for writing in such a way that the reader can't wait to find out what happens next. The book, A Whole Nother Story, is perfect for reluctant readers and bookworms alike because it is full of danger, mystery and just the right amount of silliness.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I often used this book when I taught in a traditional school setting. I found even the most reluctant readers enjoyed it and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. This gave me an opportunity to show them that their ideas could be equally fun and interesting to a potential reader. Students that didn't see themselves as creative were more open to sharing their work. For my Outschool classes, I like to encourage students to interact during the lessons and I believe this class will give them a perfect non-threatening opportunity to do so. The material will give students of various academic levels the chance to work together as peers.
