Class Experience

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. You will be writing for 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, and I will guide you through four of them. During this time, you get to lock away your inner editor, let your imagination take over, and just create! By the end of the month, you can submit your novel to the National Novel Writing Month website!

Our classes will go over the following ideas:

Class 1: BRAINSTORM
You may already have a great idea, but it's so important to stretch your imagination to discover all of the possibilities in your head! In this class, we will brainstorm at least 3-5 possibilities, and by the end, you will pick your best one and run with it!

Class 2: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
This class will be all about developing your main character into a round, vibrant, and believable person! You are about to spend all month walking in this person (or creature's!) shoes, so we want to make sure you really like them.

Class 3: PLOT
We want to make sure your story doesn't go off the rails! In this class, we'll learn all about the plot diagram, and give yourself a road map for where your story needs to go.

Class 4: THEME / ENDINGS
Endings are some of the hardest parts of writing, especially when we have spent so much time and energy into creating the novel! In this class, I will give you some strategies for how to end your novel with a strong lesson, or theme, that can be applied at the end.

This class is inclusive, which means students of all abilities are welcome. If you student needs any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience.

Hello! My name is Jackie Shaw, and I am so excited to teach your child. I specialize in teaching reading and writing to grades 7-12. I earned my Bachelors of Science from New York University, and my Masters of Arts at Middlebury College. I am also a devoted mom to two children, and will absolutely pull from my experience of teaching them to design fun and engaging lessons for the younger learners!

I have been teaching in public education on Long Island for the last 13 years, and I will now bring what I know from the classroom into my teaching practices with Outschool. I am a teacher who deeply values communication and activity. We learn from talking and from doing, so my classes are really centered around experiential learning. I hope to hear my students' voices more than I hear my own.

My hobbies include cooking, crafting, yoga, traveling, raising animals, and MUSIC! I minored In music performance at NYU and was in a production of Peter Pan in 2019. I will definitely be drawing on my passions as well to create engaging classes for our learners.

I look forward to meeting you!
