US Grade Kindergarten
Get Your Facts Straight PreK- K: Addition and Subtraction within 10 is a positive, fun, interactive class where participants interact with each other and the teacher. Students will use manipulatives, drawing, games, and stories to practice counting, adding, and subtracting within 10. Students will develop, practice, and share strategies for counting and problem-solving in order to strengthen their mathematical foundation. This class is appropriate for PK or beginning Kindergarten students who are learning the beginning foundations of math: count sequence to 20, using fingers and objects to count, identifying and writing numbers, and solving simple addition and subtraction within 5 and 10. Each class will begin with an activity focused on building number-sense , followed by stories and word problems to practice counting and addition and subtraction strategies. Students will be expected to share and discuss problem-solving strategies with others. Classes cycle continuously; classes are not sequential. Each week includes: Counting, Addition, and Subtraction Practice Learners will participate in a number sense activity, listen to and solve math stories, practice writing numerals 0-20, and explore representing and solving word problems using five frames, ten frames, fingers, and number lines. Each daily session includes: - Math story problem and discussion - Interactive math activity (examples include: writing numbers, counting, composing and decomposing numbers, number/quantity identification, comparing numbers, making 10, and identifying patterns) - A fun group math game
Learning Goals
Learners will practice counting, solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and stories to represent and solve problems.

Mrs. Burns has a Bachelor of Arts in French (minor: Art History; University of Illinois at Chicago, 2006) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (National-Louis University, Chicago, Illinois 2010). She is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google for Education Certified Trainer.
Karrin Burns enjoys using inquiry-based learning and design-thinking in her classroom to maximize student learning as well as encourage student voice and choice. She believes education and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand, cultivating creative thinkers through establishing an innovative idea-driven atmosphere.
