Get Your Facts Straight: Addition and Subtraction within 100 is a positive, fun, interactive class where students will use manipulatives, discussions, games, and writing expressions and equations to practice addition and subtraction within 100.  This class is appropriate for students who have completed Kindergarten or Grade 1 experience with math foundations such as count sequence to 100+, using objects to count, writing numbers and expressions, and solving addition and subtraction within 100.  

Daily sessions are structured to be engaging, fun, interactive, and stress-free. Although the focus is on addition and subtraction within 100, we also focus on other Grade 1 and 2 math standards, like understanding place value and telling time. Our focus is to learn to think critically and be efficient problem-solvers.

Each week includes: Addition and subtraction within 100
Learners will practice composing/decomposing numbers within 100 through addition and subtraction. Supplies: writing materials and counters.

Each daily session includes:
- Math story problem and discussion 
- Interactive math activity (examples include: counting and place value, composing and decomposing numbers, comparing numbers, telling time, and identifying patterns) 
- A fun group math game

Learning Goals

Learners will solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, expressions, or equations to represent the problem. This class (3 times weekly) is meant to complement school or home school math instruction.

Supply List
Each learner needs:
1. Writing materials (either paper/pencil, whiteboard/marker, or tablet/stylus)
2. Counting cubes or other manipulatives for counting
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Mrs. Burns has a Bachelor of Arts in French (minor: Art History; University of Illinois at Chicago, 2006) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (National-Louis University, Chicago, Illinois 2010).  She is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google for Education Certified Trainer.

Karrin Burns enjoys using inquiry-based learning and design-thinking in her classroom to maximize student learning as well as encourage student voice and choice.  She believes education and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand, cultivating creative thinkers through establishing an innovative idea-driven atmosphere.  Entrepreneurial spirit and start-up mentality help to foster a creative and effective community!
