What are SMART goals? SMART goals are a systematic way to target what you want to improve so that you can see real results. Students will learn the not-so-magic equation for creating clear, positive and important goals in a way that sets them up for success. At class #1 students will learn the meaning behind goals that are SMART - Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely. We briefly explore the intention and power of each "letter." Lecture, fun handouts and engaging discussion helps students to understand and define each one of the 5 components to successful goal writing. Next, I share 10 specific tips that give students an outline to follow, mentally, when penning their "wants." We end the lesson by reviewing examples of previous students' SMART goals and work together to transform an ineffective goal into a powerful, set-for-success SMART goal. Prior to our second class, students use a handout to brainstorm their own SMART goal ideas. At the start of class #2, I walk students through a list of questions that help them focus on details necessary for planning their own SMART goal. Their brainstorming ideas and my guiding questions help each student pick one goal on which to focus and perfect. Next, I present the class with prompts used to transform one brainstorm idea into a powerful SMART goal. Students leave class with their very own SMART goal committed to paper:-) Method / Materials: Class #1 - Why are SMART goals SMART? (handout, lecture, discussion) Tips for writing SMART goals. **AS OF MAY 1, 2024 I AM TAKING A TEACHING SABBATICAL FOR BOTH GROUP CLASSES AND 1:1**
I am passionate about teaching children to make meaning out of the text by exercising their comprehension and analytical abilities, developing language skills, improving memory, and expanding their understanding of the world when they comprehend the written word. When I get to be a part of the process of children coming to understand the text and its meaning, I feel fulfilled as an educator and know that these are valuable life skills.
I have spent the past 13 years studying executive functioning and organizational abilities in young children, middle schoolers, and high schoolers for professional and for personal reasons. I have been fortunate enough to attend several professional conferences focusing on the connections between neurodevelopment and paying attention, organizing, planning, prioritizing, task initiation, understanding different points of view, regulating emotions, and self-monitoring (keeping track of what you are doing). My knowledge deepened when, in 2020, I began working as a study skills and executive functioning tutor.
My Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Master of Science in Child Development allow me to design developmentally appropriate lessons optimized for student success. Twenty-four years of combined experience teaching in public school, tutoring, and being a licensed Pediatric Developmental Therapist has given me tools to educate ages 3 through 18. Additionally, working as an online ESL teacher has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage students in a virtual classroom, use digital material and master a variety of live online applications.
When not teaching, I'm busy being a mom to my three children. During my free time you'll find me engrossed in one of my favorite hobbies: foster animal care, loom knitting, tap dancing, or planting in my garden. You will always see me with a book:-)Reviews
