Class Experience

Hello! This is a beginners group vocals class in which you will learn the fundamentals of developing a voice for the stage! This is for students within or close to ages 13-18 who are beginner singers. No experience is necessary, just come ready to sing, and with a 45 second-1 minute cut of a song that you like to perform.

In this class we will cover topics such as: proper warm-ups, vowel placement and sounds, healthy breathing for singers, and breaking out of your comfort zone.

The class will be structured as follows:
1. We will start class with a group warm-up.
2. Next, we will reflect on some short clips of past Broadway performances and discuss how the performers use their voices on stage. [I will be sharing my screen with you at these times, we will watch the clip, and then discuss!]
3. We will then learn vowel shapes, placements and sounds that are needed for singing on stage, as well as the fundamentals of breathing during singing.
4. Lastly, we will share our skills! Please prepare a 45 second- 1 minute cut from a song of your choice to perform for the class. This is highly encouraged. (However, you are welcome to observe if you experience any form of stage fright). We will listen to each performer, and give positive feedback to our peers.

My style of teaching involves YOU! Your input is very important, which is why I will create opportunities for you to sing for the group and participate in discussions. I also teach with the goal of helping my students to be confident and skillful. Once you start training with me, I am invested in helping you to become the best performer you can be.

We will make funny sounds, so get ready!
[There will be opportunities for individual participation, but you are not required to participate or sing for the group if you are uncomfortable.]

***Refund/Transfer/Makeup Policy: My classes follow the 'Limited' refund policy model - Full refund until a week in advance, or within 24 hours of purchase (until class starts). No transfers between sections may take place once the course begins. A student may make one transfer before they must remain in the class they have transferred into. Additionally, please understand that no refunds or makeups will be issued for student no-shows or absences. Lastly, no refunds will be issued by the teacher for technical issues on the student's end.***

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Lauren Layfield and thank you for your interest in my classes! I have been teaching Voice and Acting Lessons to students for over 10 years, and am so happy to be bringing what I know to Outschool.

I am happy to be offering weekly singing lessons as well as a broadway singing group class. I believe that every performer deserves to feel confident and prepared, and I am here to help give you the tools you need to put your best foot forward. In my classes, we work on healthy singing techniques, confidence, performance techniques, and much more! I teach a range of genres such as pop, rock, musical theatre, and classical voice.

I've been performing since the age of 6, and graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre and a minor in Dance Studio Administration, as well as from Fordham University with a Masters in Business. I have a knowledge of music theory, dance, piano, and singing.

My goal is to deliver to my students a personalized, supportive, and educational session in which they leave class feeling more confident and equipped with the information they need to progress. I am grateful to have taught over 2,000 individual sessions with Outschool, and have learned so much about how to create, customize, and teach online singing lessons.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. I look forward to teaching you soon!
