Social skills are epic and ultra cool when taught and used in a kid kind of way! This class was created in response to parent request and is loosely based on the popular Preschool Manners: Social Language classes I also teach. This class is for young elementary students. It is designed to help them understand and navigate various social situations with a language framework. We will focus our time on brief, teacher-led lessons followed by in-class assignments and practices sessions at the end of each class. We will use 8 different topics to guide our discussions and practice sessions: Class 1: Hiking and Mountain Climbing: Learning the tools we need to successfully navigate social situations to reach the summit! Class 2: Deep Sea Diving: A deep dive into how to have a conversation with peers Class 3: Snowboarding and Surfing: Navigating smoothly through changes in conversation Class 4: Snack with Royalty: Building on proper social language learned in week 3 and applying it to structured social situations Class 5: Just Hangin' with Friends: Using appropriate social language in the most relaxed settings Class 6: Hot Chocolate and Donut Shop (Lemonade and Cookie Stand): Using appropriate social language skills in public places Class 7: Moon and Mars Landings: How to respond appropriately (with excitement!) when something is "off the charts" cool Class 8: Hot Air Balloon Ride: Time to soar! Student-led discussion Each week students will learn and practice a social language concept within these learning goals and themes. This class is academic and play-focused in nature; it is not therapeutic or diagnostic in any way.
