US Grade 3
Let's get ready for Third Grade! Learners will be introduced to the following topics over the course of this 5 day bootcamp: Day 1: What's the Product: Intro to Multiplication Learners will be presented with missing product story problems to solve collaboratively. The focus for this session is using and critiquing different strategies for multiplying; including repeated addition, skip counting, modeling, and using known facts. Day 2: Divide and Conquer: Intro to Division Learners will be presented with missing factor story problems to solve collaboratively. This session will cover repeated subtraction, skip counting, modeling, and using known facts. Day 3: Building a Garden: Figuring Area and Perimeter How big is your garden? Learners will be introduced to area and perimeter concepts by creating, measuring, and building a garden with squares. We will learn the difference between area and perimeter, and learn to compute both. Day 4: Sharing with Friends: Intro to Fractions Which is larger: 1/2 or 1/3? Learners will practice sharing a whole in various ways, as well as comparing eighths, fourths, thirds, and halves. Day 5: Sides and Angles: Geometric Reasoning Is a rectangle a square? What is a quadrilateral? Learners will compare, analyze, and describe various two-dimensional shapes by sides and angles. Students will also share a student-created problem with the other learners. This class will introduce learners to the topics covered in Grade 3 while focusing on the Standards for Mathematical Practice: make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; reason abstractly and quantitatively; construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; model with mathematics; use appropriate tools strategically; attend to precision; look for and make use of structure; and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Learning Goals
Learners will have a foundation to help them succeed in Grade Three math.
