Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, and percent error.

This standard requires students to use proportional reasoning to solve real-world problems that involve discounts on sale items. They should be able to use ratios, rates, and percentages to determine the original price, the discounted price, and the amount of the discount or markup. Students should be able to make connections between different types of percent problems, such as percent increase and percent decrease, and use them to solve more complex problems. They should also be able to apply their understanding of percentages to other contexts, such as simple interest, taxes, gratuities, and commissions.

Students will participate in fun and engaging activities using a series of slides with multiple challenges that we will battle together. Students will understand real-life processes for finding discounts when they go shopping. This is also great for test prep and entrance exams.

Week 1:
How to calculate percentages using proportional reasoning.

Week 2:
How to calculate taxes on items.

Week 3:
How to calculate percent increase and decrease based on discounted amounts.

Week 4:
How to calculate the amount saved based on an allocated budget.
