Class Experience

US Grade 3
Third Grade Reading while enhancing and/or maintaining your child's academic skills and strategies with fun-filled weekly themed units! 

Each week students will engage in a fun theme that includes essential components of reading instruction:
*comprehension
* vocabulary
*fluency
*phonological awareness
*phonics and word analysis

Other literacy topics include:
*grammar, writing and visual discrimination

Students will work with a small group and the teacher to complete the daily activity.

Sample week: *Note: Skills and strategies change weekly to enrich or enhance student's learning
Tuesday: Students will be introduced to their weekly story (Fluency) and comprehension activity
Wednesday- Phonics/Phonemic Awareness Activities
Thursday: Vocabulary/writing/grammar

Week of June 3rd:Juan's Lesson: recalling story details; drawing conclusions; sequencing story details, identifying main idea and supporting details, identifying synonyms, understanding figures of speech, using apostrophes to show ownership, writing possessive nouns, writing exclamatory sentences  
 ( Week 1: This week starts Thur-Sat ONLY)

Week of June 10th: Shea and the Leprechaun: recalling story details; drawing conclusions, sequencing events, understanding word meanings, writing compound words, reading with accuracy and expression, identifying descriptive words

Week of June 17th: Owls: recalling story details, drawing conclusions, sequencing events, categorizing information, understanding word meanings, using prefixes, reading with accuracy, using quotation marks, alphabetizing the second and third letter, seeing the whole

Week of June 24th: Animals in Winter: recalling story details, making comparisons, sequencing events, understanding word meaning, identifying long vowel sounds, adding the suffixes -er and -est, using comparative and superlative forms, changing y to i when adding endings.

Week of July 1st: The Proud Turkey: recalling story details, using critical thinking, drawing conclusions, sequencing events, making a comparison, understanding word meaning, adding the suffixes -er and -est, using comparative and superlative forms, using adjectives and  verbs

No Class the Week of July 8th-14th

Week of July 15th: Bats: recalling story details, using critical thinking, sequencing events, relating story information, using vocabulary in context, using multiple meaning words, choosing the correct homophone, adding plural endings, understanding present and past tense verb forms, identifying irregular past tense verbs, writing questions

Week of July 2nd: Two Groundhog Friends: sequencing events, recalling story details, making inferences, identifying synonyms, using multiple meaning words,  using critical thinking, distinguishing real events from imaginary events, reading words with silent e, using compound words, reading with expression, writing story events in order, making a list

Students will print out their theme sheets prior to each class, students will not work ahead, but work with their classmates and teacher to complete activities. Small assignments after class will also be assigned.
