What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be expected to explore the weekly materials as well as engage in conversation, planning, and sharing with the teacher and peers in the classroom. Learners can expect to spend 1-2 hours on sketching, drawing, and painting, each week for this class. Not all learners will work through the materials at the same pace and both small and large goals will aid in time management to keep everyone on track.

Class Experience

In this four week flexible schedule class learners and the teacher together will work to plan, draw, and paint a still life using gouache paints.

This class will cover the elements of art and design as well as observational painting and study of composition.

Week #1: Learners will study compositional techniques such as the rule of thirds. We will collect house hold items and study composition by creating a viewfinder and thumbnail sketches.
Week #2: Learners will select a composition for their painting and create a value study and colour swatch palette with the materials they intend to use. We will talk about types of gouache paints, palettes, brushes, and the technique of blocking.
Week #3 Learners will begin painting their still life compositions focusing on luminescence, contrast, layering thin to thick, and paying close attention to light and shadow.
In week #4 We will add finishing touches to our paintings, we will talk about protecting and displaying our art work and how to maintain our palettes/paints.

Once per week learners will participate in active art practice and sharing their progress using the Outschool classroom.
Discussion and experience shares regarding various types of art supplies and techniques will occur during week one and continue to focus on gouache in the following weeks.
Discussion about samples shared by the teacher will take place in the classroom and learners will be encouraged to seek out their own samples from life or online.

In this classroom learners and the teacher are working together through the material. The teacher is a colearner and there to facilitate the learning. Learners can expect to be presented methods for creative problem solving and techniques and will be welcome to use alternate solutions when appropriate. Learners will engage together in the Outschool classroom to discover unique ideas and creative provocations.

Learners should be comfortable sharing their work in the classroom, speaking candidly about their art practice, be able to check in to the classroom each week, and be comfortable asking questions.

This class is ideal for learners who are serious about their art practice, who seek to improve their artistic comprehension, visual problem solving, and work habits. Learners who are interested in painting from life and building skills in gouache painting benefit from the techniques and ideas presented in this class.
