Class Experience

Beginner Level
It's a big ol' world out there - let's talk about this class. :)

What will be taught?
Cooperation, teamwork, communication! The catch is, that we'll never actively talk about any of these things - we'll learn by doing, by experiencing, and by seeing how effective we can be as a team when we're utilizing each skill as a team. (This is, in my experience, is the single most effective way to teach these life long skills in a meaningful and impactful way.)

How is your class structured?
Because of the playful and engaging nature of the Grounded Sim, the class allows learners to explore, be creative, and interact with their friends in a guided environment. In other words, while learners are engrossed in a fun environment where they can relax with friends, we'll return again and again to practical applications of skills that they need to master in every day life. (Learners learn... without realizing that they're applying and implementing the very skills that we all rely upon in daily life.)

How much will learners get to interact?
Because of the team nature of the Grounded Sim, learners essentially interact from minute one and continue throughout class. Often learners will wish to continue building and planning between classes so that when they return, they're able to hit the ground running.

Learning Goals

Students will learn cooperation, communication, and teamwork skills both while working together to 'survive' in this new world, and in planning for their next sessions.
Learners will be encouraged to organize their thoughts before asking questions or giving directions: This is a life skill that pops back up in everything from speaking on the telephone to life in the college classroom.

Learning Needs
Each of my classes can be specifically tailored to the needs of my learners. My Masters is in Special Education and I strive to find a way for anyone who wants to take part, to be a part. We can discuss what your learner needs anytime.
Parental Guidance
Grounded is a simulation where players are challenged to be the size of a cricket in a normal world - this means that they'll face things like "giant" spiders and ants. It is rated for students ten and up.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My background is in Special Education, earning two Masters degrees in 1997, and then proceeding to teach students in settings as diverse as a lock down rehabilitation center for gang members and felons to Living History teaching and curriculum building with a nationally known museum. I've taught elementary students and college students, non-traditional students and students who didn't even know that they were learning. :)
