Class Experience

In this class students will learn how to design their own garden spot, decide which plants to grow, start seeds indoors or by direct sowing, care for their garden, and most of all, enjoy it! Students will learn by listening and interacting with the teacher through conversation, as well as by sketching out their garden design idea on paper if they choose to do so. My teaching style is fun and energetic with some lecture, as well as visuals, games, and video clips. No experience is required on the part of the learner.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an understanding of the steps they need to take to design and grow their own garden using graph paper, pencil/ colored pencils, seed packets, seedling pots (if desired), garden tools, and the soil in which they plan to put their plants.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Amy, and I have been a teacher for 20 years. I have a Master's degree in Education and taught art for 14 years. I also teach ESL online. My latest interest is in teaching others how to design, grow, and take care of their own garden. I homeschool my two children and run my own small farm where my family and I work together to grow flowers, vegetables, and fruit.

I believe that children learn best in small group settings where they are allowed to explore the subjects they are interested in while emphasizing and expanding upon their own unique abilities, talents, and gifts.

My passions are being with my family and doing creative things together, gardening, and cooking. I live in an 1800's farmhouse in a small town in western North Carolina. My family and I enjoy raising chickens and harvesting their eggs on our small farm that we call "Pickin' Thyme." We also have two hound dogs named Gimli and Gabby!
