Homework
1-2 hours per week. It's most beneficial for students to come to class with work they need assistance with. It's best for that to be done outside of class, but if not, they can do it in class. However, it will take away from the time I have to give them feedback.

Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
By improving scholars' skills and confidence in writing and editing, many transition from needing guided support to being independent self-sufficient writers. For students who struggle to express themselves through writing, no problem. I've had tremendous success helping students brainstorm and pull out information for their written work.

3 Techniques to improve writing and self-editing skills:

1) Authentic Elevated Language
We will combine professional language with your scholar's personal style so the reader gets to know their personality, and the essay isn't robotic or generic. Scholars will ensure every word is something they have said or would like to say.

2) Elaborate and Explain The Point
Often times, essays have good information, but lack details or an explanation. This may leave the reader confused or yearning for more information. I will help scholars eliminate gaps in information so the reader fully understands the writer's point.

3) Write It All Then Cut It Down
To ensure we've included all the details necessary to tell the full story, scholars need to write everything without worrying about word count. We will then pull out the most important information, use the Strike Through Method to monitor what's cut and make the writing as precise, intentional and clear as possible.

While I proofread and give suggestive feedback, scholars will accept or reject my suggestions and edit the essays in real time. This makes the editing process quick and smooth. It also allows us to talk through the process so scholars understand what information is valuable to leave in, what can be removed and why the choices make the essay better. Any feedback they aren't able to make during class should to be addressed before our next session. We'll continue this process until the essay is complete.

Scholars can receive support with
1. College essays/Personal Statements
2. Applications for scholarships, competitions, jobs, etc.
3. Essays, cover letters, speeches, blogs, creative writing
4. Developing an organization routine to keep track of their progress, applications and requirements

A minimum of two sessions will be necessary for all essays. This depends on how well it is written and how much scholars work on their essay or application between our sessions. It can take up to six sessions to complete essays for prestigious universities if a significant amount of support is required.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their writing and self-editing skills to enhance their success in education and in life, and confidently submit applications and essays.
