Class Experience

Join us to learn German through speaking it!

This class will be taught immersion-style, meaning the teacher will use only German to talk (English only when absolutely necessary). There will be no explanations in English. The teacher will speak slowly and illustrate each word with a gesture or picture to convey meaning. Simple sentences are used to start and gradually made more complex as learners become comfortable with them.

Each lesson will be divided into "Small Talk" and "German Conversation"

Small Talk
Learners will engage in small talk in German for the first 10 minutes or less of each lesson. The teacher will use a prompt sheet written in German and English for this small talk session. This may end up being a mix of German and English. The main goal is to get to know each other.

German Conversation
There is no prompt sheet for this section. It is purely conversational with pictures and gestures. Each week will have a theme related to daily life and the teacher will guide learners through a discussion of the theme in German. The teacher will start out with simple sentences and, depending on how well learners do, will gradually increase complexity over the course of each class session. Later on in the session, learners may also be encouraged to talk to each other using phrases they learned at the beginning of the session.

Learning Aids
Learners will be informed of each week's theme and receive a vocabulary sheet beforehand to help them prepare. This worksheet may contain English explanations.

A worksheet incorporating one element of German grammar related to the theme will be provided after each class with answers posted on a delay to allow for more practice. This worksheet may contain English explanations.

Guten Tag and welcome to my page. I am excited to practice language with you! Having lived in both Germany and the United States, I am bilingual in German and English. As a German-English translator, ESL teacher, and German teacher, I have spent over 10 years inhabiting the crossroads where German and English come together. This experience has been an invaluable asset that helps me explain the nuances of each language to my students in simple, practical terms. I started teaching English as a second language to children in China online about one year ago and I love all of the opportunities online learning presents for engaging learning experiences.

I teach both German as a second language and English as a second language classes. My sessions focus on providing students with authentic situations in which to practice targeted skills such as grammar, vocabulary, and conversation in English or German.

I am an ATA-certified German ->English translator and hold a CELTA Certificate from Cambridge for ESL teaching, where I learned curriculum development and teaching skills that I now apply to both English and German classes. I also hold a Master of Arts in interkulturelle Germanistik (Intercultural German Studies) from the Universität Bayreuth in Germany and a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies from Weber State University in the United States. An Associate of Applied Science in Technical Drafting for manufacturing and mechanical engineering from Weber State University gives me a solid technical background as well. I love combining my technical skills with language to create interesting and unique classes for young learners.

When I'm not working, I can be found biking up to 50 miles on my trusty bicycle or trying to learn a language I don't already know (currently French).

I look forward to seeing you in class!
