Class experience

US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner Level
I have been teaching German, composition, and arts & humanities for more than 30 years, and I speak German with near-native fluency. I have a PhD in German Literature and was the 2014 Indiana German Collegiate Teacher of the Year. I bring first-rate content knowledge and pedagogical expertise to the online classroom, plus a genuine love of working with young learners.

Because I have extensive experience at the college level, I know just where high school students are headed and can expertly guide them as they prepare themselves for the next step. My focus on learning strategies and study skills is an added benefit, useful for any learner.

See my Profile Page for my resume.
Homework Offered
In addition to attending the four 45-minute class sessions per week, students are expected to spend time in regular vocabulary practice and to study for the quizzes and tests.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Formal assessment is optional. All students will be encouraged to take the quizzes and chapter tests, as they are excellent learning opportunities and provide feedback on how well students are learning the material. Families may choose to have their learner given a numerical course grade or a narrative summary or both.
Grades Offered
This class works well for students with unique learning needs. In addition to face-to-face interaction, we use a textbook and PowerPoints, so students have written material in front of them. Instruction is very clear, in English and German.
Required:
+ Kontakte: A Communicative Approach, 8th edition, ISBN: #978-1259307423
+ binder pages with syllabus, course plan, and any other printed materials (provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course)
+ blank paper and pen/pencil

We will be using the 8th edition of the textbook. Please be sure you do not purchase any other edition by mistake.

I highly recommend that students have access to a paper copy of the textbook. A new copy can be purchased from Amazon for around $79 and will enable learners to do the exercises without the distraction of past students’ notes or answers. We will use the second half of the textbook in German 2, so you will be able to use it for two full years. (If you must economize, you can purchase a used copy.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
