Class Experience
The goal of this course is to teach learners how to calculate geometric measurements such as perimeter, area, surface area, and volume and apply them to construct buildings in a Minecraft world.
I feel that math is an integral part of life. However, often times in a classroom students are unable to see how the concepts they are learning connect to their lives. As a lover of math and Minecraft, I will provide a fun and educational environment inside of Minecraft that shows how math can be applied to your child's favorite game.
A simple calculator is recommended for checking work. Learners will be provided access to either a Minecraft Bedrock Edition Realm or Minecraft Java Edition Server to be used only for the purpose of this class. Learners will need access to a Minecraft account and will need to provide me with their username before being able to participate. A Java account is available on PC and Bedrock accounts are available through Windows 10, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOs, and Andriod. *A knowledge of how to play Minecraft is required for this class. Gameplay will not be taught. A few hours of play or watching tutorial videos online should be ample preparation for a novice Minecrafter.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Minecraft (Java or Bedrock)
Learners will be assessed at the end of each week. Assessment will consist of examination of their weekly build and in-game notebook. Feedback will be provided based on the completion and understanding of each weekly assignment. This feedback and interaction with me can be done through messages/email or in-game, which ever the learner prefers.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Minecraft is a game that contains cartoon monsters (zombies, skeletons, witches, etc.) and cartoon violence (swords and bows).
